There is an appealing history to the Cambodia gambling dens that lie just over the border from next door Thailand, in which casino wagering is not allowed. Eight casinos are situated in a relatively tiny area in the city of Poipet in Cambodia. This collection of Cambodia gambling dens is in an excellent location, a 3 to four hour drive from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 most popular wagering locations in Asia. Cambodia gambling halls do a thriving business with Thai blue-collar workers and visitors from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a couple of Westerners. The astonishing income acquired from the gambling halls ranges from 7.5 million dollars to over 12.5 million dollars, and there are a couple of controls requirements for casino ownership. Ownership is assumed to be mainly Thai; although, funding sources are cryptic. The borders are officially open from 0900 to 5:00 p.m., and although visas are allegedly required to pass, there are methods around this, as is correct of many borders.

The first Cambodia gambling dens premiered in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were required to close in 1998, leaving only one casino in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a docked bateau gambling den, highlights one hundred and fifty slot machines and 60 tables. The Naga gambling hall never closes with 42 tables of mini-punto banco, four tables of vingt-et-un, ten of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and a single table each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.

The initial gambling den in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in the late nineties and the Golden Crown soon followed. There are one hundred and fifty one armed bandits and 5 table games at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four slots and sixty eight table games at the Holiday Palace. The newer Holiday Palace Casino and Resort highlights three hundred slot machines and seventy tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 one armed bandits and 96 table games, including 87 baccarat banque (the most dominant game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. In addition, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 slot machines and sixty six of the familiar gaming tables, as well as a single table of Casino Stud Poker. Another one of the eight gambling halls in Poipet, again in a hotel, is the Princess Casino with 166 one armed bandits and 97 casino games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of a comprehensive resort and hotel compound that contains a number of comforts on top of the gambling den, which offers ten thousand square feet of 130 slots and 88 tables.
