There is an interesting background to the Cambodia gambling halls that reside just over the dividing line from nearby Thailand, where gambling hall gambling is illegal. Eight casinos are situated in a generally tiny space in the metropolis of Poipet in Cambodia. This conclave of Cambodia gambling dens is in an excellent area, a 3 to four hour trip from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 largest gambling locations in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a thriving business with Thai blue-collar workers and guests from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a couple of Westerners. The phenomenal capital acquired from the gambling halls ranges from 7.5 million dollars to more than twelve and a half million dollars, and there are a couple of limitations requirements for gambling den ownership. Ownership is assumed to be mainly Thai; although, investment sources are vague. The borders are ceremoniously open from 9:00 a.m. to 1700, and despite the fact visas are allegedly needed to cross, there are methods and means around this, as is true of many border crossings.

The original Cambodia gambling halls opened in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were forced to close in 1998, leaving only one casino in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a docked ship gambling den, features 150 one armed bandits and 60 gaming tables. The Naga river boat never closes with 42 tables of mini-baccarat, 4 tables of vingt-et-un, 10 of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and 1 each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.

The 1st gambling den in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in 1999 and the Golden Crown quickly opened. A total of one hundred and fifty slot machines and 5 tables at the Golden Crown and 104 slots and sixty eight table games at the Holiday Palace. The newer Holiday Palace Casino and Resort highlights three hundred one armed bandits and 70 tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slot machines and ninety six gaming tables, including eighty seven punto banco (the most dominant game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. In addition, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five one armed bandits and sixty six of the familiar gaming tables, as well as a single table of Casino Stud Poker. An additional of the eight casinos in Poipet, also a part of a hotel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slot machine games and ninety seven casino games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of an all-around vacation and hotel compound that highlights many conveniences aside from the gambling hall, which offers 10,000 sq.ft. of 130 slots and 88 tables.
